THE SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND
Antibodies, also known as Immunoglobulins, are glycoproteins produced by the immune system whose basic function is to identify and neutralize those harmful and foreign substances to the body, called antigens. Antibodies synthesize a type of leukocyte or white blood cell called B-lymphocyte, which circulate through the blood.
These antigens are produced by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, etc
The first reference on the existence of antibodies came from Emilio von Behring and Kitasato Shibasaburo who in 1890 found the presence of a substance in the blood with the ability to neutralize the existence of certain infections. It was then they developed the serum against diphtheria.
Soon after they made public the results of their investigation. It showed that the resistance power to the disease does not reside in the cells of the body, but in the blood serum free of cells.
They were awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1901 for this discovery.
This was the first step in initiating new work on the study of antibody structure, understanding its functions and the future development of vaccines.
