The science behind the jewel
A fractal is an object whose structure is repeated on different scales. It has the peculiarity that no matter how closely or far away we observe it, we will always see the same structure.
Fractals mark a transition between order and chaos and mathematics in nature. They abound in vegetation (cauliflower or ornamental plants like ferns), in landscapes of the Doñana and its marshes in Spain or in the incredible forms that water takes as it freezes.
Interestingly, in our own body we can also find structures that follow a fractal pattern, such as the vascular network, the bronchial ramifications, the neural network, the disposition of the glands, etc.
Waclaw Sierpinski was a Polish mathematician from the beginning of the twentieth century who investigated different forms of fractals. The most well-known triangle “The Sierpinski Triangle” bears his name.
