The scientific background
The word atom comes from the Latin atomum “indivisible” [a- (no) , tomum – (part)]. Its concept as a smaller and indivisible element of matter was postulated by the Greek Atomist school.
At present we know that atoms are composed of subatomic particles; protons and neutrons that compose the nucleus and electrons orbiting around the nucleus in different atomic orbitals.
This lithium atom is made up of three electrons orbiting around the nucleus. It was discovered by the Swede Johan August Arfwedson in 1817. His name derives from Greek and means Stone.
It is the lightest metal that exists (its density is about half that of water) and among its uses include the manufacture of modern lithium batteries.
