THE SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND
Antibodies, also known as Immunoglobulins, are glycoproteins produced by the immune system whose basic function is to identify and neutralize harmful and foreign substances to the body, called antigens. Antibodies synthesize a type of leukocyte or white blood cell called B-lymphocyte, which circulate through the blood. These antigens are produced by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, etc.
The first reference made on the existence of antibodies was in 1890 when Emilio von Behring along with Kitasato Shibasaburo, found the presence of a substance in the blood with the ability to neutralize the existence of certain infections. Thus they developed the serum against diphtheria. Soon after they made public the results of their work. It showed that the power of resistance to the disease does not reside in the body cells, but in the blood serum free of cells. This investigation was awarded the first Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1901.
This was the first step in initiating new work on the study of antibody structure, understanding its functions and the future development of vaccines.
